Broken Up Couple Turns To Reddit To See Who Keeps The Cat

Since U Been Gone, Someone Like You, I Will Survive– it's no wonder there are millions of breakup songs. It's one of the most difficult things a person can go through, and in this situation, it's even harder because there's a pet involved. A young man turned to Reddit this week after his relationship went sour. But, this wasn't your ordinary, run of the mill breakup. This was an eight year relationship, from high school to the present, that had to be broken off because one of the core principles that they'd agreed upon had changed in the young woman's mind. She can't be faulted for her change of heart (about what you'll see in a second), and the boyfriend doesn't fault her either. Still, while splitting things up, how are they supposed to decide who keeps the cat? 

The boyfriend has one hangup in mind that's upsetting him a bit. He doesn't feel the girlfriend's family home where she'll be going back to live is a suitable place for their darling cat Felix. Also, we probably should've said ex-girlfriend's family home, but we digress. These people consider their living room to be some it's own sort of rescue society, and there are already loads of animals running around the filthy house that the cat would have to try to adjust to. That's not going to work for Felix, since he's a very timid, only cat with no experience in an environment like that. The boyfriend offered compromises to his ex, and tried to see the big picture. But, now they're talking, and he's trying to figure out if he was in the wrong. We'll let you decide that for yourselves after you read all the comments.

    Such A Bummer

    As people progress through their lives, their needs and wants change. Even if you're in a relationship, you're going to be growing individually along with the collective growth that happens in your couple (or throuple, or whatever– we don't judge). So, it's a bummer that this woman's priorities changed, but we can't blame her or her partner for the way that they're handling things.

    That's Not Going To Work

    So, OP clarifies later in the thread that the couple's work schedules made it so that he had to take care of the cat. He's not mad at his ex that he had to care of things, but that being said, he's trying to continue doing that in this next stage of their lives. That can't have come as a shock to his girlfriend, but it also can't have felt too good.

She's probably relying on her parents to take care of him, when they already have more animals than they can handle. The cat living situation was always going to be the hardest decision as you both love the cat.
